I see.. well it's really a personal thing when it comes to buying new tech. It's not my daily driver, but the laptop I use is quite old now, and I don't see myself letting go of it until it's not able to browse the web on linux.

I only stopped using XP because I didn't know crap about computers back then to clean up my limewire viruses.

To get back on topic, I started playing this f2p Korean CS/Zombie game just for shits & giggles. I was going to uninstall it after one round, but ended up playing for 3 hours. I don't even know…

It does run on XP! And Wine too, I believe.
There's a demo version available at the developer's site, you could try it to see how it would run.

My laptop is 9 years old and doesn't achieve playable performance for the demo on wine.

I've had so much fun with DoD, one of my favorite games in years.. so I decided to get Team Fortress. Very odd game, I can't put my finger on it. But I've only played 2 rounds on the 24/7 Badlands server, so I need to assess it further…

I also started playing this Finnish cell phone game called Clash royale. Totally not my cup of tea since I hate these mass advertised money drains, but it's not as bad as I thought. Decent simple gameplay, quick matchmaking, no formal conversation with opponent, ect..

So has anyone been playing any warhammer 40k games recently? I've been playing some Dawn of War 2 chaos rising and also a fair bit of space marine. My hype for Dawn of War 3 is very strong.

Also one of you lovely sushi rolls can have a free dawn of war 2 key which I got with my PC gamer subscription.

I hate Skyrim too, and I bought it 3 times on different systems :/

I went back and played Oblivion last year and it doesn't hold up great.

But at the time, in 2005, Oblivion looked like some next level shit. I remember getting Game Informer that year and mentally masturbating to the screenshots.

Yes, I was really impressed by this minotaur lmfao.

Morrowind would be amazing with another combat system. Not an action based system like Skyrim, but something less clunky than what it uses. I'm sure there's a mod for this somewhere.

The music, dialog, and overall atmosphere is on point however.

Yeah, I loved oblivion when it came out too, when I was younger and it was newer.
I think I know when I started really liking morrowind more than it-
One time, I had no internet for a while, so I played morrowind on my xbox, and REALLY got into roleplaying it, putting myself in the world.
I actually decided one particular, totally unimportant NPC was mai waifu and visited her every day, and built a little shrine of flowers and nice potions behind the counter with her.
Ive never even beaten the game, but I could get into its world much better, and it was much more interesting to do so.

Oh wow, are you me? I just started a new Skyrim character earlier today and I'm on another book hunt. Past characters have been more about military, political, or historical texts, but I'm playing a sort of priest, so finally I have a reason to present The Dreamstride.

I couldn't do it in Oblivion or Skyrim because

>lolphysics

But in Morrowind I would always carry around the following items when I traveled:

>book I was "currently reading"

>jug of Sujamma
>travel lantern
>piece of paper
>loaf of bread

When I finished playing for the day I would find a suitable place, set down the paper and put the bread on top, and arrange the rest of my items around to make a "camp". Then I would save the game and turn it off.

Oh, I'm guessing it's the kind of dark humor **and overflowing creativity** you enjoy in those games. Definitely take a look at Catherine on the PS3/360 and Killer7 on the GC/PS2.

If you haven't played other Taro Yoko games, Drakengard 3 on PS3 is pretty good, it's a prequel so you can play it without playing the first. A step down from Nier in the writing (overall a little more restrained) but I've heard D1 is near-unplayable (though meant the story is meant take it further than Nier), everyone recommends watching an LP though I haven't gotten around to it. He didn't work on D2, you can ignore it.

And it's untranslated but take a look at Mizzurna Falls on the PS1. It's playable even without a script handy. Very Twin Peaks influenced like Deadly Premonition, though without the surreal horror or humor. Kind of obscure but there's a write up here:
http://easternmind.tumblr.com/post/2906013149/mizzurna

Also might be interested in thecatamites' work:
http://harmonyzone.org/Videogames.html
He's an indie, very strong cynical punk sense of humor. It's all freeware. Try Goblet Grotto and Murder Dog IV.

Do you guys ever get the urge to just drive forever along an endless
highway? i keep having weird dreams about journeying down a beautiful road absorbing the rich oranges just as the sun is beginning to set and feeling the cool ocean spray on my face.

i want to start playing driving games to relax and im having trouble tracking down games where i can throw on some music and just *drive*

so far i've played a little outrun and drift stage im having trouble finding the right flavour of "waxy" and "dreamlike" that im hunting for.

TL;DR recommendations for relaxing driving games?

Test Drive Unlimited and Test Drive Unlimited 2. Can be pretty chill games, you can drive around the whole island without doing anything (it's open world). There are even some chill missions, such as delivering car to a destination without wrecking it and there's no time limit, so you can drive as slow/fast as you like. And also a lot of cars to choose from.

 No.188

If your okay with driving trucks, Euro Truck Simulator 2 with relaxing music is the closest to "waxy" and "dreamlike" that I can think of.

Layers of Fear is basically a walking- / or door-opening-simulator with nice graphics
and predictable Jumpscares.

So it's nothing more than another YT-fodder.

You can't die, so every threat is out the window
and its so cliche that it's nothing more than textbook-"horror".

I really want to post this image from Soma to describe in a few pixels what the game is all about instead of using clumsy words but you'll be spoiled if you want to play it. I'll say if you're ok with another Amnesia-like walking simulators not adding much when it comes to gameplay, expect some chills, an overwhelming cyberpunk (as in GiTS cyberpunk) vibe and very memorable sequences and environments.

I found Outlast meh, just too much, too fast, and the run-and-hide mechanics was very annoying. Though pretty hellish and gruesome I must admit. Definitely worth it when cheap.

STALKER as said before while not an horror game is often pretty spooky thanks to pic related and all the monsters roaming freely in the dark of the night. A must play imho.

>player driven economy
A player driven economy placed within the standard format for mmo's and really games in general is naturally destined to fail (typically either left to ruin, or the community gives up on the gold-based economy and switches to a barter system), simply due the infinite generation of currency, and thus the economy will be subjected to infinite (and often rapid) inflation.
You can see this clearly in just about any multiplayer game with a global economy, from diablo to wow, and even within single player games with all negotiation taking place with npcs (the difference in price between early-game and late-game weapons is typically under exponential growth)

There are only two games I'm aware of that have successfully mitigated this state. One is EVE, which does so by requiring every purchase to be extremely high risk (the big purchases are on ships, which are of course permanently destructible, and resources, which maintain a physical form, and are thus subject to destruction and theft).

The other is PoE, which does two things. It recognizes that its spiritual predecessor, Diablo 2, was subjected to this state of affairs, where gold quickly became useless but the community found an alternative currency is the valuable, consumable & rare objects known as runes. A bartering system naturally occurred, which remained subject to inflation, but at a much slower rate than that of gold (it was both readily consumed to produce higher-quality gear, and the best runes spawned rarely.)

 No.159

>>158
Thus, PoE simply instantiated the model as the baseline of its currency. Every non-equippable item served dual-purpose, as both currency and consumable-utility.
However, their system isn't terribly sufficient, as trade comes far easier than it did in Diablo 2. Where D2 limits one to trade within a lobby of 8 players, or act outside of the core game, PoE has a /trade channel for the entire server. Their model, based on what I imagine was similar rarity rates as D2, falters under the greater population of a global marketplace, and rapid inflation incurs regardless.
However, PoE has a second system in its sleeve. The primary servers for playing are reset every 2 months.
So the economy is reset as well, and can thus survive

Also another interesting economy was WoW's, where they able to mitigate the effects of inflation in a similar manner as PoE. They simply wiped out the value of all items on the server with each expansion pack. However, I have not played or read about WoW enough to be aware if the community gives up on the gold-based economy

My main point is that you can't trust player-driven economies if the developers are following the 'standard' game design philosophies, as without careful consideration, it is quickly driven to ruin.

 No.164

>>158
You're forgetting Runescape. RS did it very well. A lot had to do with the fact that when you die, you dropped all but 3 items, or all your items if you were skulled.

It wasn't until one of the devs sold his shares to some other company (giving them enough shares for a hostile takeover) that the economy, and the game itself, went to shit.

Also apparently this game didn't do so well. I just looked at the site, and it basically got cancelled and is now going to be called "Fragmented".
